Your Memory or Your Life

A Museum of Memory seems a contradiction in terms. Memory, this thing so ephemeral, so subjective, so fallacious, tinted with colours which easily fade with time: how could we freeze memory in the static structure of a museum? And yet memory exists and should exist as a legacy for generations to come. Indeed, there ought to be a place where memory of the dead and the living becomes one, re-lived in the present moment of remembrance: the memory of war, of the defeated and the conquerors. But also the memory of old jobs as a history of work; of facts, songs and domestic habits which no longer exist. And ghost stories and fables; old sayings, superstitions and popular beliefs; of places and waters disappearing, which were once a source of livelihood for hundreds and hundreds of people. All this is knowledge. All this is part of history and experience.
