The Theatre of Memory is what we remember.
The Theatre of Roots is what we are made of.
Our roots contain everything that makes us human beings. Our roots have processed years and years of history, schooling, habits and customs, daily life and spiritual life.
The Theatre of Roots contains our memories, but also what we have borrowed from the culture in which we have lived. The word Culture is understood in the broadest sense: the culture of origin, the culture studied at school, the classics from around the world, popular culture, comics, Italian and foreign music, the culture of travelling to unknown islands, the culture used for work but which is not part of a universe conceived as a creative universe. The culture of origins and political culture as commitment and participation in the polis. The culture that writes and the culture that speaks. The culture that prays to an invisible God. The culture that laughs and the culture that cries like an ever-open wound. The culture of the transplanted foreigner who romanticises his roots, who cannot express himself as he could in his own culture, and the culture of those who stayed at home and often do not see or feel what they are made of. The culture of trees and harvests, of skyscrapers and supermarkets. The culture born in the shadows and the one made of light. In the Theatre of Roots, we are all adoptive parents and children, raised in the order of things, in the culture that dominates and silences while remaining attached to the roots of a deep culture that is never told because it does not belong to memory and has no vocabulary. The culture of the Roots is a drop distilled from hundreds of ingredients that include everything mentioned above. But from litres and litres of water and mixture, only a single drop is produced. This drop is the Root. What makes us adopted in our country of origin. What we have learned as adopted children and what we have carried with us for centuries. We are made of all this.
