Measure for Measure
4 and 5 December 2010
Carnal, dark, sensual, Measure for Measure is a journey into the secret foldings and unfoldings of power. A play, an installation, a promenade performance. The audience will walk through lanes, courtyards and back-alleys of an imaginary Vienna. Power pervades all like an addictive drug. Nobody's safe. Even the good surrender to the seduction of power.
Aware of the spreading corruption, the Duke disguises himself as a friar in order to observe society from afar. Before going into "hiding", he gives Angelo full powers and Angelo, the righteous, soon displays his excess of zeal. In his exercise of duties he sentences young Claudio (amongst others) to death for having got Juliet, his betrothed, pregnant. Intoxicated and excited by the aphrodisiac of power, Angelo turns out to be the most corrupt because his crime remains ensconced in the impenetrable and irreproachable closet of the law. Justice is done, but at what cost?
