Hic Sunt Dragones – Here Be Dragons was the phrase medieval cartographers wrote on maps when they had to indicate a wild and unknown territory.
The translation, ‘here be dragons’ (or lions, or other more or less fantastical animals), was the password to access an ‘other’ world. The phrase ‘hic sunt dracones’ marked a boundary, an insurmountable limit to our knowledge: this is where the lands explored so far end; beyond that lies what we do not yet know, the unexplored and mysterious lands of dragons and bandits.
