This year’s theatre performance workshop in collaboration with the ‘A. Checchi’ Institute focuses on Hamlet. The drama of the young prince of Denmark and the even younger Ophelia, who is in love with him, provides a relevant and highly topical backdrop for bringing to the stage the unease felt by young people in today’s world.
The text of Shakespeare’s play, with its timeless universal themes, will be adapted by firenza guidi based on research carried out by the director into the issues of youth unease today.
The young people will be the protagonists of the entire production and creative process of the performance, constantly supervised by the team of professionals from the Frantoio di Fucecchio, from lighting to performance, from the design and manufacture of costumes to media and organisational aspects. The classes involved are sections A and B/C of the fifth year of the Liceo Scientifico (science high school).
The project, which gives students at the Liceo Checchi the opportunity to meet performers and technicians from the Frantoio’s Permanent Company and participate in the creation and production of a show, was launched in 1997. The activity allows the young protagonists to bring out otherwise dormant creative skills, to acquire specific skills in theatre production and the organisational management of a cultural event, while also enhancing the aspects of cooperation, collaboration and sharing in order to achieve a common goal. The performance, directed by Firenza Guidi and with the students in the role of performers, will take place on Tuesday 7 February at the Aditorium La Tinaia.
The tragedy of Hamlet, combining themes ranging from psychology to moral philosophy to the history of religions, adds cultural value to the work of the students who are preparing for their final exams this year, bringing them closer to the vast dimension of Shakespearean exploration. The similarity between the existential condition of the participants in the workshop/performance and the figure of Hamlet is striking, that of a young man moving against the backdrop of a universe in crisis of values, where the thirst for power prevails over every other human need. Hamlet, with his eternal uncertainty between being and appearing, thought and action, shifts the focus from private revenge to an investigation into the foundations of human existence and the validity of human actions, catapulting us into the contemporary world through powerful analogies and a universal mood capable of inspiring and enthralling young people of all ages.

Elan Frantoio’s activities are based on the philosophy of staging new dramas: new because they are unpublished in terms of texts and scenography, or new because they belong to contemporary authors who have never been represented in our country.
