Romeo e Giulia

In collaboration with the Year 13 classes of the Checchi Institute

At the centre of a makeshift marquee, halfway between a fairground, a circus and a party marquee, stands a cross-shaped stage divided by a wall of gauze. The gauze separates the worlds of the Montagues and the Capulets. A world fuelled by hatred absorbed with the mother’s milk and by atavistic violence. Beneath the cross-shaped stage lies an underground world of secret passages, forgotten objects and old toys. It is an urban underworld, mistreated and subterranean. A trashy world. A world layered like the performers’ trashy costumes. The questions remain the same: do people still die for love? Does eternal love exist? Love that lasts? Do we live to love the love that lasts? To love the love that lasts? In short, true love still exists, hidden in the streets, amidst the buildings and concrete, innocent and vulnerable just as Shakespeare described it four hundred years ago.
