Adapted from William Shakespeare and directed by Firenza Guidi
Carnal, dark and sensual, the world of *Measure for Measure* winds its way through the alleyways, nooks and courtyards of an imaginary Vienna, where corruption, poverty and decay reign supreme. In the streets, rubbish piles up in bins rummaged through by stray dogs, the homeless fall asleep on beds of cardboard, and the underworld of the night runs rampant with vandalism, violence and prostitution.
The Duke, feeling guilty about the lack of order and any sense of morality in his city, ‘hides’ himself in the guise of a friar to observe this society from afar, in the hope of reforming it. Before ‘disappearing’, the Duke grants full powers to his Vicar, the dutiful Angelo, who immediately indulges in excessive zeal and abuses of power. Among these is the death sentence handed down to the young Claudio, guilty of having impregnated his betrothed. Intoxicated by the aphrodisiac of power, Angelo proves to be more corrupt than the corrupt, for his crime is obscured and protected by his unsuspicious nature and the impenetrable force of the law. Justice is restored by the Duke’s cunning, but at what cost?
