What face does war have? What are the signs of a tragedy about to unfold? To mark the commemoration of the Eccidio of Padule di Fucecchio, ElanFrantoio presents a performance born of fragments, recollections and memories, drawn from interviews with living witnesses who experienced the events either directly or indirectly. Small individual stories collected using the verbatim method – that is, word for word, without any alteration to the interviewee’s text – which, through the artistic process, regains the dignity of a slice of life and truth that would otherwise be denied it. The churchyard and the interior of the church in Massarella thus become a place of remembrance, a celebration of collective memory, rediscovering that originality of theatre which, in medieval times, staged the community itself and its relationship with events, with the human, with the sacred. The history handed down is a generalisation; major events mark a clear line; but in reality the plot becomes more complicated, the fabric is woven by individual men, individual lives played out in the colours of their memory.
