What would Gismonda be like today, in our society? Where is Gismonda within us? The auditorium in Fucecchio will become a garden, a space sheltered from the plague, a bedroom, an ivory tower, a piece in a tapestry weaving together the light and shadow of an ambivalent, dark Middle Ages, made up of disease, violent deaths and deformities, but also of salvation, angelic women and soaring castles; a space, however, that will be at the same time virtual, technological, contemporary. The event, in fact, is conceived as an opportunity for dialogue between the students and their medieval ‘contemporary’, a beautiful, sensual, enterprising sixteen-year-old who falls in love with a humble servant, wins him over, and experiences love, passion and grief. A rebellious female figure who, with determination and courage, fights for her happiness, convinced of the legitimacy of her love for a servant, because true nobility is nobility of spirit, which is not hereditary but can be found in every social class. Finally, a woman who is extremely sensual, vivacious and attentive to her own pleasures, for Boccaccio does not demonise the flesh; on the contrary, his heroines seek concrete love with clarity and energy, without shame and without losing their dignity.
