A fairy tale in which music, history and art blend together, conceived and directed by Firenza Guidi
Inspired by the young composer from Fucecchio, Antonio Nelli (1778–1844), the story is that of a boy of humble origins but with an extraordinary talent for music, who lived in the Grand Duchy of Pietro Leopoldo. The boy lives in the countryside of the Padule. The Duke is visiting – during the welcome ceremony, he hears the boy playing the organ and is deeply impressed. In the Padule region of Tuscany, people are still dying. Antonio’s mother is on her deathbed (his father has already died). Pietro Leopoldo hears of this, recalls the boy, and has him brought to court, ordering the start of a land reclamation project in the area where the boy and his family live. Little Antonio remains with Pietro Leopoldo until the latter’s departure from Firenza in 1790. In Vienna, Pietro Leopoldo falls ill, senses the end approaching and sends for the boy. In the final hours spent with the old Emperor, the boy hears, in his mind, the notes of the Improperia. At times he whispers fragments of it into Leopold II’s ear, who says to the boy: “Go and continue the work we have begun”.
