Ecstasy

XII International School of Performance

Ecstasy is a journey into the past, like an unknown continent. A map waiting to be discovered, a foreign geography written in characters that are both arcane and familiar. Ecstasy has its roots in the recent past, yet it stammers prophecies about the future and speaks of the injustices of the present in all societies where silence is enforced and freedom of spirit and conscience is a precious and desperate aspiration. Ecstasy speaks of women and men who dared to speak out under conditions of repression. It is not a question of English, Welsh, Italian or American women.

The women of Ecstasy are a generation of exceptions who make the solitary cry all the stronger. Listening to these few voices—whether weak or strong, feverish or ecstatic—it is easier to hear the vast, motionless silence of the masses. The message of Ecstasy is simple and direct: for God’s sake, do not let this happen.
