‘She drinks, wipes her face, puts on a record. She sings the song as if she were dancing alone. The audience cannot see her face. She is in the semi-darkness, with her back to them. She begins to speak. Slowly, her face emerges from the shadows. Her face is covered in blood and she is slowly wiping it with a white linen towel.’
Thus begins this new play by Firenza Guidi, which serves as a platform for study and theatrical exploration for the actress Silvia Bagnoli. It is precisely through this one-act play—a monologue, an outburst, a whisper and a dramatic one-to-one—that the actress takes on the challenge and measures herself against her first Actor’s Studio with Guidi. “It was Silvia who suggested the book *My Life with Picasso* to me as a possible starting point for a play inspired by the story told by Françoise Gilot, a very young painter and lover of Pablo Picasso, who, during their ten years together, would become the mother of his children Claude and Paloma. ‘But who is she? Who is this woman speaking to us?’ – continues Guidi – ‘Françoise Gilot, perhaps? I don’t think so. I think she is a woman. One of the many, invisible and nameless, who left no mark on Picasso’s life. But who were, instead, marked by the painter in a unique and unmistakable way, to the point of madness.” The fundamental concept and approach of the show is that this woman, the actress, becomes him, the painter, Picasso. Just as a stalker, a medium, or a fanatic might. She becomes obsessed and clings to him, growing feverish and possessed, yet with a mathematical precision and method. She embodies his words, his lovers, his customs and habits, and concludes, alongside him: ‘There are only two kinds of women: goddesses and vipers.’
The Actor’s Studio will be presented on Saturday 25 November, to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The evening, which begins at 9.00 pm, will first showcase the work produced in the workshop ‘Once Upon a Time There Was Passion’, followed by the one-act play, Goddesses and Vipers.
