To mark the round-table discussion ‘Women: Violated Rights’, organised by the Municipality of Fucecchio for International Women’s Day, the Frantoio presents the Italian premiere of *Baglady*, a production in which Firenza Guidi has adapted the play of the same name by a great contemporary author who has never been translated into Italian: Frank McGuinness.
Written in 1985, the monologue BAGLADY addresses, through the voice of the protagonist – played by Laura Bencini – the loneliness, marginalisation and denial of oneself and one’s past that often follow an episode of violence and abuse.
Firenza Guidi’s directorial vision focuses on the drama written by McGuinness, embarking on a journey of exploration into madness to uncover its language and secret grammar, in order to define the fine line separating alienation from reason and to ask whether, as in the case of the ragged heroine of BAGLADY, madness is nothing more than the only, desperate way to survive a dysfunctional and pathological normality.
