Journey/reading/chorus/installation in memory of the victims of the Holocaust
As a testament to the fact that the act of remembering – indeed, Remembrance itself – is a painful exercise that must be constantly repeated (for when we stop, oblivion advances unchecked), the Frantoio di Fucecchio, following a great demand from local schools, is once again organising the journey – that of the deportees and that of the public – between past and present, so that the dialogue between the two eras remains alive.
The performance, inspired by Guidi’s numerous trips to the concentration camps of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, as well as to Terezin (Czech Republic) and Ebensee (Austria) and, more recently, to the camps of Ravensbrück and Buchenwald in Germany together with pupils from the lower secondary school in Cerreto Guidi, Vinci and Sovigliana, aims to evoke a historical moment unparalleled in the physical, material and spiritual harm inflicted upon millions of human beings; it is a testimony to the past, an invitation to discern its traces in the present.
In this edition, the Performance for Schools is enhanced by its integration with the ‘Diari’ project. Young audience members attend the performance, each bringing their own diary, already bound but blank. As they experience the performance about life in the extermination camp, the pupils themselves become the deportees who watch, live through, listen to, weep and feel first-hand the powerful emotions evoked by the performance. Their journey merges, in a single stroke, the identity of spectator-witness with that of protagonist in the ordeal endured by the deportees. At the same time, the pupils become custodians of memory as they record their emotions and hardships in their diaries, which they write live during the performance.
