For the whole week, the yellow school bus will not take me home or to school, but to Auschwitz. The students in the first years of the “Leonardo da Vinci” secondary school in Cerreto, Vinci and Sovigliana will take a week-long trip to the Auschwitz concentration camp, set up for the occasion at the Museum of Memory and the premises of the Misericordia in Cerreto Guidi.

The surroundings of the extermination camp will be the backdrop for a performance project conceived and directed by Firenza Guidi and produced by the Compagnia del Frantoio di Fucecchio. It is entitled DIARI (DIARIES) and is the beginning of an educational and artistic journey that will accompany the children from the first to the third year, when they will leave, this time for real, for Amsterdam to visit Anne Frank’s house.

The young spectators will attend the show by the Frantoio’s Permanent Company, each bringing their own diary, already constructed but empty. firenza guidi personally met with all the classes involved and explained, through a small workshop, how to manually construct the diary object with straw-yellow paper, complete with cover, title page and dedication.

Through the show about life in the extermination camp, the children themselves become the deportees who watch, live, listen, cry and feel the strong emotions provoked by the performance. Their journey merges the identity of spectator-witness with that of protagonist of the ordeal experienced by the deportees. At the same time, the pupils become custodians of memory as they recount their emotions and adversities in the diary, which is written live during the performance.

For the DIARI Project, firenza guidi proposes a brand new format and methodology with the aim of creating an interactive theatre that is history, art, creative writing and education.

Director, author and director of Elan Frantoio, firenza guidi has been producing theatre shows and films inspired by events, memories and phenomena related to the local and universal sphere for fifteen years. Elan Frantoio’s activities are based on the philosophy of staging new dramas: new because they are unpublished in terms of texts and scenography, or new because they belong to contemporary authors who have never been represented in our country.
