DS_ L'Elfo della Rosa

Concept and direction: Firenza Guidi | unicycle research: Kenzo Tokuoka

DS_THE ROSE ELF is a fascinating exploration of body language and the unicycle, creating a rich and multifaceted performance aimed at a diverse audience, ranging from adults and young people to children of varying abilities.

The unicycle is often seen as a tool for comic skill or, in any case, associated with circus clowns and street theatre. The potential of unicycle language as a powerful physical and emotional vehicle has not yet been fully explored. In this second phase of the project, aimed particularly at very young children, the research is loosely inspired by H.C. Andersen’s fairy tale The Rose Elf, using it as a source of inspiration.

In our research, we have explored the relationship between the art of unicycling—an activity that never allows for absolute stillness—and Andersen’s fairy tale, creating four distinct yet interconnected characters: the young princess, the elf, the wicked brother, and a final figure, created by the wicked brother, who embodies all the characteristics of the other characters. An androgynous, ambiguous figure, both good and evil, sensual and harsh, who leaves behind a world full of mystery.
