Reading/choir/performance in memory of the women of the Massacre
Il Silenzio del Bue is inspired by Franco Giustolisi’s book *L’Armadio della Vergogna* and tells the stories of mothers, sisters, wives and daughters whose lives were tragically cut short, alongside those of their husbands, sons and brothers. It is not a symbolic commemoration, but an opportunity for people to come together and share their experiences.
The wardrobe has a dual symbolic significance. On the one hand, the wardrobe – a piece of furniture – an object that holds incriminating documents and which remains locked away for years with all its secrets. On the other, the wardrobe as an object of identity and memory, the pride and wealth of the woman who keeps her dowry, trinkets and embroidery within it, and all that has not been destroyed by time and oblivion. The wardrobe leaves the public or private sphere to enter the square and take on a third meaning: the emotional one. Every type of wood, humble or precious; every grain, scratch, crack, drawer and mirror finds its voice and tells its story. Each wardrobe, brought into the square and thus uprooted from its corner of the world, becomes, through the actresses’ narration, a testimony to a life, a repository of the memories, dreams and anxieties of the victims of Nazi crimes, or eyewitnesses, or simply the voice of the entire community.
The new edition of the event, in addition to two public performances at the weekend, is aimed at pupils and teachers from lower and upper secondary schools in the Municipality of Fucecchio and the Empolese Valdelsa district. The performances for pupils will take place in the mornings from 5 to 10 October 2011, with one or more performances per day.
