A performance about memory and roots
The Lensi Meditation Garden in Stabbia transforms into a natural stage for the performance *Fiori di Sangue* (Flowers of Blood), conceived and directed by Firenza Guidi. The performance will take place on Wednesday, August 23, at 9:30 p.m. and will draw on the sites of memory in the Cerreto area. Guidi’s new play draws on local testimonies collected year after year to keep history alive and tell its story. The performance will fill the Garden of Remembrance with sounds and colors, shouts and whispers that transport the audience back in time to that distant August 23, 1944; the audience will face the expanse of fields, the site of the massacre and the history of the Padule.
For Firenza Guidi, *Fiori di Sangue* is a way to reconnect with her roots: the director is in fact originally from Massarella, and the Padule Massacre directly affected her family, causing the loss of her grandfather and uncle. Another uncle, Firenze—from whom she takes her name—was instead lost in Russia.
The result will be an intimate and collective portrayal of the memory of the Nazi-Fascist massacres in Tuscany, in which the voices of the victims and the perpetrators will intertwine to create a complex, multifaceted performance. The performance will transport the audience to the reality of 1944 through the emotions evoked by memory; a visceral impact that nevertheless does not overlook the firsthand accounts of those who were there and who lived through that day. Once again, Guidi has sought out these accounts, transcribed them, and then transformed them into the universal language of theater.
