A new play and production that recounts the unrest and uprisings of rebels and bandits during the reign of Leopold II of Lorraine.
The French Revolution turns everything upside down. Pietro Leopoldo leaves the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1790 to assume the imperial crown, but the French Revolution has already brought about major changes. Discontent is rife and bands of brigands and rebels are causing unrest in the Tuscan countryside.
Among the agitators is the famous brigand Orcino di Orentano. A well-known figure, he is a cruel brigand yet a gentleman. In Firenza Guidi’s imagination, the brigand is flanked by male and female brigands who rampage like Robin Hood through the countryside of the Padule and Maremma. Theirs is a different kind of justice, meted out with their own hands, and a different kind of crime, often at the expense of the rich and to the benefit of a dispossessed people reduced to starvation.
The Lorraines, particularly in the figure of Pietro Leopoldo, had faced the so-called ‘four infamous crimes’—crimes still of medieval origin and considered offences: lese-majesty, forgery, indecency, and heinous crimes. The rebels and brigands of the late 18th and 19th centuries appealed to a different kind of justice and committed other kinds of crimes.
