A spectacular event blending theatre, set design, circus and local history, inspired by the true story of Donna Lucia, a widow from Fucecchio, who in 1346 was put on trial for harbouring prostitutes and gamblers in her home on Via Borgo Valori.
“From the Podestà’s inquiries preserved in the archives of the Municipality of Fucecchio
19 June 1346: The Podestà Stefano del Forese brought proceedings against Donna Lucia, wife of the late Stefano di Ugolino, who, in her own home situated in Fucecchio in Borgo Valore, had harboured gamblers and prostitutes.
It has come to the Podestà’s attention that the said Lucia, knowingly, with intent and malice, and with the aim of making a profit, on several occasions and on a continuous basis, in her own dwelling house situated in the castle of Fucecchio in Borgo Valore, which borders the street, with the house of Ser Bertoldo di Oddolino and the castle’s charcoal kiln—which house she holds on lease—has harboured gamblers playing games in which one may lose or win. Furthermore, since the said Lucia kept public prostitutes in her own house, who derived profit from those who wished to have carnal relations with them within the aforementioned house.
And all this was done by the said Lucia in the present year.
The podestà therefore instructs the municipal messenger, Mazzeo di Bonfiglio, to issue the first summons to Lucia, so that she may appear before the podestà to defend herself, delivering to her the document containing the charge.
On 22 June, the podestà issues the second summons, instructing the same messenger.
On 28 June, the podestà granted Lucia a period of four days to present her defence.
On 10 July, the podestà instructed the nuncio to go to the town square and, to the sound of a trumpet and by public proclamation, to issue a proclamation against Lucia, sentencing her to pay 32 lire on the one hand and 4 lire on the other; and if she fails to pay the said fine within the prescribed time, she is to be captured and led through the streets of Fucecchio and flogged in accordance with the provisions of the statute.”
