Freely inspired by the Greg Dawson book, La Pianista Bambina
The piano saves lives. The love of music, passed down by her father, is in fact the key factor that enables the very young Zhanna to survive the harshest years of the war. The little girl escapes the grip of the Holocaust thanks to her talent at the piano; her slender child’s fingers fill even the darkest corners of history with joy and magic.
Freely inspired by Greg Dawson’s book *The Child Pianist*, *Baby Yar* is a new play written and directed by Firenza Guidi and performed by Lisa Savini.
Baby Yar is the name of a ravine near Kiev, the capital of what was then Soviet Ukraine, where the Nazis dumped the bodies of more than 100,000 men, women and children during a phase of the ‘war of annihilation’ (Operation Barbarossa), ordered by Hitler in 1941. The Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich drew inspiration from this terrible event to write his Thirteenth Symphony, known as ‘Baby Yar’, in 1962, which incorporates five texts by the poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko.
The performance is part of the Actor’s Studio project, a series of productions launched in October with ‘Baglady’, performed by Laura Bencini.
The Actor’s Studio takes its name from Lee Strasberg’s famous New York school, where in the 1950s renowned actors such as Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Marilyn Monroe studied. With this fascinating new initiative, Firenza Guidi aims to open the Frantoio to a new type of programme designed to give actors who already possess a wealth of experience the opportunity to engage with new creative exploration and performance challenges.
The new pieces on the programme aim to bring to the audience the voice, body and experience of actors who also come from the Frantoio’s permanent school, creating events that serve both as training and experimentation for the performer, and as an opportunity for everyone to discover unpublished texts and contemporary authors.
